04.11.2011 Stories surrounding the 8th TUI Marathon

Today we will present some more stories surrounding the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. And then at the end of the week we will look forward together, because on Friday, 4 November, the online registration will start for the 9th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. Best to make a note of the 21 October 2012 in your calendar today – the next “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ will come around quicker than you think …

Tennis star Carlos Moya fired starter’s gun for UNICEF Kids Run

On the day before the marathon there was a heart warming event when 2,000 young upcoming athletes aged from two to twelve years ran for a good cause.
Depending on the age group the children ran either a 600 or 1,200 metre course in the old town, cheered on by parents, relatives and friends and also by tennis star Carlos Moya, who fired the starter’s gun.
Their sporting ambitions were rewarded by TUI with a donation of five euros per child who took part. The amount collected will go to the Unicef aid project “Water for Niger – Every drop counts“, which aims at improving the living conditions of children in that country.

Running Award
There was a big surprise this year in the race for the title of the “Fastest company in Europe“. The Inca Gardenhotels team appeared as if out of nowhere in the group assessment and sprang ahead of the competition to win the title over the half marathon distance, in which the two fastest women’s times and the two fastest men’s times are taken into consideration. Maybe it was because the winner of the half marathon distance, Jonathan Gomez Espinola, ran for Gardenhotels?
In any case the Gardenhotels team relegated last year’s winner, pop singer Mickie Krause and his team, to second place. In third place came the team from Bellavista Hotels. Overall 15 teams entered the Running Award – thank you all for taking part!

27.10.2011 Had a good run!?

The overall situation was good, indeed the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca took place under optimal conditions. On the weekend of the event the city of Palma presented itself from its best (sunny) side so that the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ was certainly able to live up to its name. We thoroughly enjoyed the time there with you and very much hope that you had a good return trip. In the following we want to present you with the most important information, stories and results around the autumnal sporting highlight on Majorca.

Even more international – Runners from 59 countries

Just how international the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is could be clearly recognised at the victory ceremony. Runners from five different countries stood on the rostrum: from England, Sweden, Germany, Spain and Morocco. The TUI Marathon continued its great progress with the number of runners increasing by 13.14 percent compared to last year. Overall some 9,205 runners took part in the event in Palma. 1,404 runners attempted the top discipline of the marathon and 3,487 runners started out in the half marathon. Running or walking over the ten-kilometre distance were 2,314 entrants and in the Unicef Kids Run some 2,000 children aged from two to twelve showed their sporting enthusiasm.

New course record over the shorter distances

Besides the record number of runners we were pleased to see two course records over the shorter distances: Jonathan Gomez Espinola broke the record over the half marathon distance by finishing in a new best time of 1:08:41 and Guillem Duran Galletero ran the ten-kilometre distance in 00:31:51.
Fastest runner in the marathon was the Englishman Mark Dalkins who finished in a time of 02:34:17, leaving the competition behind him. Second was Mikael Zetterberg from Sweden, and in third place was Toumi Danmani from Morocco. In the women’s race, last year’s winner Sonja Oberem from Germany crossed the finishing line well ahead of the field in a time of 02:51:33. Second and third were Frida Södermark from Sweden and Gabriella Maine from England.

Zenet – a concert under the stars

For the first time the TUI Marathon supporting programme was expanded by putting on an additional cultural offering. On Saturday evening the Andalusian singer Zenet enchanted the inhabitants of Palma and visitors to the island with a fantastic concert in Ses Voltes directly below the cathedral.
With a combination of tango, bolero, jazz and his expressive style of singing and moving Zenet created a tremendous atmosphere in the audience. The almost two-hour free concert climaxed in a combined performance with the musicians of the Factoria de So and received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience!

Registrations for 2012
You can register for the 9th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca starting from Friday, 4 November 2011.

Great that you were there on Majorca! Already we are looking forward to the 21 October 2012, when again the race will start to “Follow the sun“!

Your TUI Marathon Team

P.S.: It has been most satisfying over the years to welcome an ever increasing number of runners to the TUI Marathon, yet for reasons of space and safety we had to move the finishing stretch this year onto the road. As a result a lot of you felt the absence of the final run-in over the red carpet in the Parc de la Mar. Still, with the new finish you have a great view of the cathedral and the sea when running along the wide home stretch.

16.10.2011 TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca becomes more international / Record participation at 8th time around / TUI donates €25,000 for children

Standing in front of the impressive “La Seu“ cathedral, Michael Frenzel, TUI AG Chief Executive, fired the starter’s gun for the 8th TUI Marathon. “The continuous increase in the number of runners and the marvellous atmosphere along as well as on the route show us that the TUI Marathon on Mallorca has won the hearts of the running scene,“ said a pleased Frenzel. He continued: “By holding the TUI Marathon we want to give something back to the most popular destination of our customers and offer an event for the whole family. The positive feedback from runners, holidaymakers and the local population shows us that this idea has really taken off.“

Marathon winner is from England
The Englishman Mark Dalkins was the fastest marathon runner, leaving the competition behind him. His winning time was 02:34:17. Second home over the 42.195km was Mikael Zetterberg in a time of 02:34:26. In third place was Toumi Danmani from Morocco (02:37:50). In the Unicef Kids Run 2,000 young upcoming athletes aged from two to twelve years ran for a good cause. Depending on the age group the children ran either a 600 or 1,200 metre course in the old town on the day before the marathon. Their sporting ambitions were rewarded by TUI with a donation of five euros per child who took part. The amount collected will go to the Unicef aid project “Water for Niger – Every drop counts“, which aims at improving the living conditions of children in that country.

RTL presenters Ulrike von der Groeben and Wolfram Kons ran to collect donations for the RTL fund-raising marathon (“Wir helfen Kindern“ – We help children). TUI supported the charity of the television station with a donation of €15,000. Besides the RTL celebrities, the pop singer Mickie Krause mingled among the athletes as a celebrity support. Together with his running team he won the second place of this year’s Running Award for the title of the ”Fastest company in Europe“.

TUI Marathon 2012 to have new highlights
Michael Lambertz, Director Group Marketing at TUI AG and responsible for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, announced the continuation of the running event: “With every passing year the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca has become increasingly popular. We are again hoping for a record number of runners in 2012. Perhaps we’ll break the 10,000 mark.“ TUI is planning to further broaden the supporting programme next year by combining the sporting event with even more cultural happenings. The 9th International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will take place on 21 October 2012.

06.10.2011 - Special Services - Newsletter

Dear Runners

Only a few days more till the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, the countdown is progressing! The golden first weekend in October has provided us with plenty of sunshine to charge our batteries. Now the days with summery temperatures are unfortunately gone, at least in England and Germany. What luck that the sun is always just around the corner at the sporting autumn highlight of the year!
The international organisation team is already on site and working enthusiastically, putting in every effort to make the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ once again this year a really special event.

We are looking forward to the marathon weekend – and to seeing you! However, before you depart we want to send you some important information.

Winner of the City Trophy

It’s now final: Reutlingen, with its 89 runners, has won the City Trophy! In second and third place are Dortmund and Berlin, both cities have entered a large number of runners for the race. Congratulations! Team captain Frank only just missed his target of recruiting 100 runners for the City Trophy – yet he and his team will still be standing on the top spot of the winner’s rostrum and can look forward to a collective after-race dinner in the Hardrock Café in Palma. Thanks go to all runners and coordinators – and congratulations to the winners!

Special Services

Once again this year we have put together a service offering aimed at facilitating your stay on the island – and the stay of those accompanying you – as well as your participation in the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.

Bus transfer: The public bus transport of the City of Palma, EMT, will provide a free special service to the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca for all helpers and runners participating in the event. On 16 October you can use free of charge all the bus routes from 7am to 5pm. Runners can use their starting number as a bus ticket and helpers can use their accreditation. Runners who have booked a TUI Marathon travel package will receive a separate shuttle transfer directly from their hotel.

Marathon Market:

We welcome our new outfitter JAKO as well as Puravida Resorts.
Have a look at what they have on their stands – it’s worth a visit!

The Pasta Party will take place in the Parc de la Mar below the La Seu Cathedral. The square, not far from where the starting numbers are issued, is enthusiastically received every year and provides a great atmosphere and a wonderful view over the ponds in the Parc de la Mar. You can look forward to a delicious pasta dish and a pleasant atmosphere on Saturday from 2pm to 6pm.

The big After-Race Party is a further weekend highlight for runners and helpers in Palma. Celebrate and dance away in a lively atmosphere with like-minded people and so share your personal (running) success with others – this will take place in the Megapark at the Playa de Palma on Sunday from 8pm. Every runner who turns up in a Finisher’s shirt will receive a free drink and a curried sausage.

Special 2011 – Concert under the stars
Why not see out the day before the big event in a thoroughly relaxed way – you can do this by taking in the concert of the famous singer Zenet. The exceptional performer has won many music awards in the past. He will present his extraordinary style comprising a mixture of jazz, swing, bolero, flamenco and tango from 8pm in Ses Voltes. Ses Voltes is a cultural centre and is located immediately below the La Seu Cathedral and as such is directly next to the Marathon Event Centre. The former barracks has an inner courtyard, surrounded by the city wall and boasts generous rooms with barrel-vaulted ceilings, which promise perfect acoustics.
The schoolchildren of the Facotria de Só will put on the opening act from 7pm. The concert is free.

We wish you a pleasant trip!

Your TUI Marathon Team

P.S. Sustainability is a major issue for us – whether it’s to do with donations (UNICEF Majorca, Peter Maffay foundation, Family-Holiday Association, RTL fund-raising marathon), transfers, stipulations made for our partners, or ecological running equipment: we think green.

08.09.2011 - 2,000 children storm onto the streets of Palma for 4th Unicef Kids Run
Tennis star Carlos Moya fires starting gun

Palma de Majorca, 9 September 2011. Anything adults can do, kids can do just as well. On 15 October 2011, the day before the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca, the fourth Unicef Kids Run will be held in the old town of Palma. About 2,000 young runners will then show their sporting prowess. They will be supported by tennis star Carlos Moya, who will start the race between the young running talents. The Kids Run is part of the benefit campaign “Children of the North run for children of the South“: for every child that takes part TUI will donate five euros to the drinking water project “Water for Niger – Every drop counts“. This educational campaign aims at explaining the meaning of water for the survival of children. “It is most important to me that children get actively involved in sport at a young age. With the Unicef Kids Run they are not only doing sport, but are also doing it for a good cause,“ emphasized Carlos Moya. Carlos will run in the main race of the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca, accompanied by 50 members of his sport studio Profitness.

Depending on their age the youngsters run between 600 and 1,200 metres. Their sporting commitment is rewarded not only by a free entry to the race but also by being awarded a certificate, a medal and a T-shirt. This year the upcoming sporting youngsters will receive for the first time their own starting bag and, if they wish, an engraved medal as a souvenir of their charitable activity. Michael Lambertz, head of TUI AG Group Marketing, said: “We are really happy that the Unicef Kids Run has developed into a real highlight for Spanish and international families. In fact it has become one of the main attractions of the TUI Marathon.“

It is possible to register online for the Unicef Kids Run up until 05.10.2011.

08.09.2011 - News

Dear runners,

The weather forecast is looking bright. According to the predictions we can expect at least a “golden autumn“ after a generally wet summer. This year though it was apparent that forecasters are not always on target with their insights into the upcoming weather. Still we prefer to bank on golden sunshine for the “most beautiful island marathon in the world.“ Here’s our latest news:

Tennis star Carlos Moya will be running
He was born in Palma – so obviously the island is still most important for Carlos Moya Llompart. The former number one in the world ranking has remained loyal to Majorca. After announcing he would be retiring from playing professional tennis in November 2010 (at the age of 34), he has now taken up a business career – as a partner in the well known fitness club Profitness.
Carlos Moya, who at the peak of his tennis career was listed five times within the top ten, will be starting in the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca with his own running team. Then he will have the opportunity to show that in running too he can conjure up a few aces.

Furthermore we are pleased that the tennis star will fire one of the starting guns for this year’s Kids Run!

UNICEF Kids Run
The upcoming runners who will be running this year in the Kids Run are for sure already getting nervous! Kids aged from two to twelve years old can take part; the course heads via the Paseo Antonio de Maura and directly to the main event site of the TUI Marathon. This year the UNICEF Kids Run will be split up into in five groups, the first starting gun will be fired (for the birth years 2007 - 2009) at 5pm.

If you would like to register your child you can still submit an online registration.

TUI will donate €5 to UNICEF for every child that takes part.
The money collected will go to the initiative “Water for Niger“: Children of the North running for children of the South – and they will surely have fun doing their thing!

Child care
After the youngsters have completed their race on Saturday, it is the turn of the adults on Sunday, 16 October: things start moving at 9 am in the disciplines of 10km run, half marathon and marathon. To allow the adults to start without any worries, TUI best FAMILY is offering a professional child care service from 8 am. First of all it’s down to the starting line to cheer on the runners, then the children can look forward to a colourful morning near Palma’s La Seu cathedral, playing games, painting and being creative, and having their faces painted. The child care service costs 15 euros.

Don’t forget to give your child a packed lunch. And afterwards you can look forward to the rest of Sunday together – when you return beaming from your race and perhaps are greeted by a blissful butterfly or a pleased pirate.

The special training tip – today once again by running coach Andreas Butz
“Runners with weak muscles in the trunk notice this from around kilometre 30 onwards. Many runners adopt a collapsed posture – they run the marathon bent in the form of a large “C“. But be careful: crunches and sit-ups encourage precisely this posture!
My tip:
A much better exercise is for instance the plank in its many variations. This constellation of exercises trains the trunk muscles and stability and ensures that long-distance runners too have a powerful, long stride.“

Wishing you a great golden September

Your TUI Marathon Team

P.S. Have you already registered for a team competition? You still have time to register for the Running Award or the City Trophy. Start off together to achieve a running success!

01.08.2011 - News

Dear runners,

We have now arrived in the middle of the (running) summer. Following the end of the Women’s World Cup the time has come for us to concentrate again on our own legs. We are already looking forward to autumn with great expectations – in the hope that the warm temperatures will stay with us until October and of course until the 8th edition of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. Here is all the latest news:

TUI Marathon voted best Spanish sporting event

The “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ managed to take first place in the Eventoplus competition in the category “Best Sporting Event 2010“, winning out against two strong competitors. The prize was handed over during a gala event in Madrid to TUI España, as the organiser, and Ultramar Event Management, the subsidiary of TUI Travel PLC that actually put on the event.

More than anything it was the concept of the “Green Marathon“ that convinced the jury: this involves sustainable measures such as CO2 reduction, waster separation, afforestation (TUI Forest) and the use of reusable materials.

The prize is an incentive and gives us confirmation that we are on the right track with the TUI Marathon. We want to continue providing an attraction for Majorca during the low season and at the same time strengthen the competitive spirit in the urban population and in the guests visiting the island aiming at sustainability and solidarity.

New: the finisher shirt for runners in the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca

For the first time the shirt has been produced by the outfitter JAKO, and is made of an impressively light and functional fabric with a plain and simple design. For sure, the official shirt of the “the most beautiful island marathon in the world“ will not only be a must-have in this year’s autumn running season. The shirt has a neutral cut so that it looks equally good on men and women. You can order your finisher shirt at the same time you register for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca 2011.

If you decide later that you would like the shirt you can purchase it on Majorca for a price of €10 – for as long as stocks last. It is available in the sizes XS - XL.

We are certain that this happy, sunshine yellow shirt will remind you even in the dismal winter months of the sun in Palma and your running experiences on the popular Balearic island.

The special training tip: today from Dr. med Andreas Leonard (German Specialist Medical Care Centre on Majorca)

“Already in the training phase runners should pay attention that they are tactically clever in their eating, and that the nutrition supplies the optimal training effect. Also during the actual race runners should make sure they adequately use the energy available. A decisive influence not only on the health but also on the sporting success is – besides the intake of the right fluids and the right amounts of fluid – drinking at the right time.

And it must be remembered that the drinks should be rich in electrolytes, supply sufficient energy and should not be too cold. Moreover, it is important not to drink large amounts in one go, but rather drink regularly up a maximum of 250 ml. You should do this about every 15 minutes. This prevents a fluid deficiency building up from the start, which once there cannot be sufficiently overcome at a later time. Of course, the amount of fluids drunk depends also on the outside temperature, because at high temperatures and high humidity considerably more fluid will be needed.”

We wish you a great summer

Your TUI Marathon Team

P.S. Last year 75 runners each donated a tree to the TUI Wood on the Balearics and TUI donated another tree for each of the runner’s trees. In June the name plaque was updated and the names of the TUI runners who donated were added. Is your name already on the list?
We are continuing! Again this year you can plant a tree in the TUI Forest. Simply note this on your registration.

23.05.2011 - Smooth run: TUI Marathon at the Virgin London Marathon

Were you there? The biggest and one of the fastest marathons in Europe again lived up to its reputation. It’s not for nothing that since 2006 the Virgin London Marathon belongs to that elite group of World Marathon Majors! This year was also the fastest on record - Emmanuel Mattai came in after 2:04:40 hours and set a new London Marathon record. Another potential record breaker was notched up - the number of new entries to the Guinness Book of Records: 33 creative ideas.

The TUI Marathon was also there in London at its stand at the busy Marathon Expo, providing information on the “Most beautiful island marathon of the world” and handing out cool giveaways not to mention the very popular cards for taking part in a super prize draw. The attractive prize: a ticket for two persons to the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, including flight, 3 nights in a hotel and starter numbers for the discipline of your choice.

The winner has now been drawn and the lucky winner is Laura Melhvish from London.

Well done and good luck! We will see you at the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.

03.05.2011 - News

Dear Runners,

At these spring temperatures and with the sun shining in your face you can run twice as fast, can’t you? Joking aside, do you know how many entrants we have up to now – we are currently up 25 percent on the number of registrations compared to the same time last year. We are really pleased about this and welcome all new fans of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.

Here is the latest news about the running event:

Highlight 2011: finishing area between the Mediterranean and the cathedral

As a result of the great increase in the number of entrants the eighth edition of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will again have a new finishing point – this time between the cathedral and the Mediterranean. When you’re sprinting along the final stretch – the Paseo Maritímo – to the finishing line in the centre of Palma you can take in the view not only of the famous landmark of La Seu, but also of the promenade and the Mediterranean.

As the organiser of the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ this is our reaction to the popularity of the event and the constantly increasing number of participants. “The new finish with its panorama view is only a few metres away from the previous finishing point on the asphalted Paseo Maritímo. This will enable runners and spectators to enjoy more space this year on the finishing straight and in particular in the post-race area,“ said Michael Lambertz, Director Group Marketing TUI Travel. We are sure you will like the new finish!

Run for Good – Continuation of the successful cooperation with RUNNER´S WORLD
Doing it once is not really enough … this could also apply to the Run for Good campaign that we had last year. Back then TUI and the Runner’s World UK called upon all those runners who were running not only for themselves, but also for a good cause to present their ideas and charity activities. From all the entrants a jury select the prize-winners.

It’s worth taking part this year too, because the first prize is a free entry to the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca including the flight and accommodation. Three other runners will receive sports equipment from our partner JAKO, comprising a shirt, trousers, a cap and a bag.

Why not take part? Click on the following link and write to us letting us know how you (continuously) put your personal charity idea into practice.

The special training tip – Today from running coach Andreas Butz
The best diet for a sportsperson is to eat everyday whole foods. A balanced diet supplies all the necessary nutrients our body needs. He who eats well, looks good and is healthy. He who eats junk, … .

My tip: Forget about dietary supplements, they are never whole foods. Nature supplies everything that a sportsperson needs: eat plenty of fruit, salad, vegetables, nuts and wholemeal products. Avoid eating sugar, refined flour products and food additives as much as possible and reduce the amount of animal protein you eat. So-called sportsman products can reduce the success of training – if companies consistently further developed their energy bars they would end up at some time or other with bananas. Ripe bananas are better than energy bars! Dates and water melons, too, are perfect as snacks for competition races and speed training. If you want to train the burning of more fat, you should do away with carbohydrates when jogging.
Water wonder: When training, water is sufficient. Even when running long training stretches up to 200 minutes, water is perfectly adequate to keep you going. In competitions and in speed training, isotonic drinks may be helpful.“

14.03.2011 - Latest news regarding the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca

Dear Runners,

Have you noticed already? There’s no stopping the arrival of Spring! Slowly, very slowly the sunshine is tempting the first buds to open, and when training it’s only natural to have a passing glance at the snowdrops and the sprouting green of the crocuses. The next summer is already on its way for sure. And the next TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca … too!

Here is the latest news about it:

JAKO - the new outfitter

We are pleased to announce and present a new partner to you: the finisher shirts of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will from now on be made by JAKO. The team sports outfitter based in Mulfingen/Hollenbach (Germany) celebrated its 20th year of existence in 2009 and can look back on an impressive history.
From the modest beginnings of making team shirts, which the company founder Rudi Sprüngel manufactured in his brother’s garage, the outfitter has established itself and now supplies well over 150 teams – from football, basketball and volleyball and even to light athletics.
Team sports has been and still is the priority of the crew in Hollenbach as well as responsible and respectful interactions with people and the environment. That’s why the company is the perfect partner for the TUI Marathon. For more information about JAKO visit www.jako.de.

Child care by TUI best Family

Never change a winning team. At the 8th TUI Marathon the children entertainers of TUI best Family will again be present – namely from 8.00am to 3.30pm.

That means you can run a relaxed TUI Marathon while your children are being well looked after in the Parc de la Mar.

Child care costs €15 and can be booked simply at the same time you register: online or using the registration form. For booking at a later date please contact info@tuimarathon.com.

The entertainers will be there already on Saturday and will have paintbrushes and paints with them to put colour on the faces of spectators and young runners in the UNICEF Kids Run.

Green Marathon: TUI forest and social responsibility

We and the runners in the TUI Marathon are firm believers in sustainability. In 2010 some 75 runners each donated a tree to the TUI Forest on the Balearics and TUI gave another one for each tree donated. Sometime during this year the names will be immortalised on a plaque listing all the donators.

Again this year there will be an opportunity to donate trees. You can book a tree at the same time you register either online or by using the form which can be downloaded.

Running for a good cause: €498 was collected for a UNICEF water project in Niger. TUI donated a further €10,000 for the project within the framework of the Kids Run.

And money was collected also for the Peter-Maffay Foundation, which helps traumatised children: €582 came together.

And it’s really easy for anyone who would like to donate in 2011: Simply tick where appropriate when you register online or in the form. We thank you here and now on behalf of all those in need!

Hotel packages online
TUI and Thomson Sports has again put together some interesting travel packages for you which include not only hotel services but also extra offers specifically for the marathon. So whether you need just the flight, just the hotel or the flight and the hotel – with TUI you can book your trip just the way you need it. Now you can choose from many hotels. We can’t help you if you’re spoilt for choice though …

We wish you the most wonderful start to springtime! Enjoy it!

Surge in registrations for the 8th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca
New finishing stretch along the Paseo Maritímo

Berlin, 11 March 2011. With registrations up by more than 25 percent compared to the same period last year the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is maintaining its steady growth in the number of participants that it has enjoyed in recent years. In October 2011 the TUI Marathon Palm de Mallorca is going into its eighth year with a new finishing stretch between the Mediterranean and the cathedral. Runners can take in Palma’s cathedral as well as the promenade and the sea view on the final sprint along the Paseo Maritímo finishing stretch in the centre of Palma. By moving the finishing zone, the organiser of the “most beautiful island marathon of the world” is responding to the popularity of the event. Until this year runners reached the finishing line by running on a red carpet beside the sea. “The new finish with panorama view is only a few metres away along the paved Paseo Maritímo. This gives runners and spectators more room along the finishing straight,” explains Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing TUI Travel.

Ana Cristina Gozalo (Head of the Spanish Tourist Board in Frankfurt), Michael Lambertz (Direktor Group Marketing TUI Travel), Francisco Antich (President of the Balearic Islands), Joana Barcelo Martí (Tourism Minister of the Balearic Islands)

ATB, the Tourism Agency of the Balearic Islands, is again a partner in the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. “The TUI Marathon has long been a flagship for the island of Majorca and the international reputation of the event is growing. The many years of cooperation between ATB and TUI have consolidated this development,” said Joana Barcelo Martí, Min-ister of Tourism for the Balearic Islands at the ITB, the International Tourism Exchange, in Berlin. For the first time team sportswear specialist JAKO will be the official outfitter of the 2011 TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca. JAKO will be responsible for the outfitting at the event and amongst other things will produce the finisher t-shirts for the runners as well as provide the t-shirts for the volunteers.

Background: The international TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is being held on 16 October 2011. The organiser is expecting more than 7,000 runners from all over Europe to line up at the start of the marathon, half-marathon, 10k run and walking/Nordic walking disciplines. The start for the marathon, half marathon and 10K run will be at 9:00am, followed by the walkers and Nordic walkers at 9:15am. 29.10.2010 - Review of the TUI Marathon 2010

Dear Runners,

The 7th International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is now history, yet those wonderfully successful days continue to please us! Once again the event centre at the heart of Palma proved its worth, indeed the famous Cathedral La Seu offers simply the perfect setting for the ”most beautiful island marathon in the world“.

Here is a summary of the most important facts and happenings of the weekend event:

Number of Participants
Taking part in this year’s TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca were a total of 8,368 runners and children. That is equivalent to an increase of 14 percent in the number of participants compared to 2009. We are very pleased that this year 701 runners from the UK took part – this means that the United Kingdom has climbed to third place in the country participant statistics.

· 1.376 women and men ran in the marathon
· 2.961 ran the half marathon
· 1.789 ran the 10 km distance
· 242 started in the Walking / Nordic Walking discipline

Marathon winner comes from Spain

For the third time the Majorcan Miquel Capo Soler was the first home over the distance of 42,195 metres in a time of 02:29:23. The fastest women was the German Sonja Oberem in 02:47:29.
With this time she beat the previous course record of 02:54:40.

UNICEF Kids Run

One of the absolute highlights on the weekend was the UNICEF Kids Run on Saturday. 2,000 children waited enthusiastically for the starter’s gun to be fired in the various disciplines; the gun was fired by rock star Peter Maffay and José Nunes, captain of Real Majorca.
For every child that ran TUI donated €5 to UNICEF for the project “Water for Niger – every drop counts“.

Party time
Later the magnet for all runners and helpers was the meeting place at the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca: the big After-Race Party in the Megapark. Every runner who turned up in a finisher’s T-shirt was given a free drink and a sausage. Lively dancing and partying continued into the wee hours of the morning at the Playa de Palma.

7th time around for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca
Misadventure in the 10-kilometre run

Palma de Majorca, 17 October 2010. A tragic event occurred in the 7th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. A runner in the 10-kilometre race met his death. He was a 49-year-old man from Germany. Julio Lobos, the official doctor for the route, said: “The runner immediately received first aid.“ Yet despite all the doctor’s efforts the runner could not be revived. Michael Lambertz, responsible for the marathon: “We have the greatest sympathy for the family and are taking all the necessary steps to support them in this difficult situation.“

The race got under way with the temperature at 15 degrees, then after almost three hours it started to rain. The number of participants was 14 percent up on that of the previous year. Some 8,368 runners from 54 countries started out in Palma. 1,376 athletes covered the marathon distance of 42,195 metres, in the half marathon there were 2,961 runners. 1,789 sportsmen and women managed the 10-km distance, either running or walking. In the UNICEF Kids Run 2,000 youngsters aged from two to twelve were able to prove their sporting prowess. The organisers see the rise in the number of participants as a clear sign that the TUI Marathon has been fully accepted by the running scene. In the meantime the marathon is a reason for holidaymakers and locals alike to visit Palma de Majorca.

Marathon winner is from Spain
In a time of 02:29:23, the Majorcan Miquel Capo Soler was for the third time the fastest man over the distance of 42,195 metres. Second in the race and on the winner’s rostrum was the German Alain Wolf (02:33:15). The third man home was Daniel Skaaning Sandersen from Denmark in a time of 02:33:41.

The first woman to cross the finishing line was the German Sonja Oberem in a time of 02:47:29, which set a new course record. The previous best time was 02:54:40. Second-placed was Birgit Schönherr-Hölscher from Germany (02:57:29) and third Dorte Dahl from Denmark (02:58:48).

Half marathon winner comes from Switzerland
Fastest half marathon runner this year was the Swiss Bruno Heuberger in a time of 01:10:37. Second-placed was Toumi Dahmani from Spain, who crossed the finishing line after a time of 01:10:57. In third place was Carsten Bresser from Germany (01:11:36).

TUI Marathon turning into the "Green Marathon"
For the first time the topic of sustainability was pushed forward within the framework of the TUI Marathon. Under the overriding theme of "Green Marathon" a number of different projects were carried out aimed at supporting environmental protection and social commitment. For instance the runners were looked after using mainly local products and utensils supplied to the runners were made of ecological and recyclable raw materials. A shuttle bus service as well as waste separation along the route also contributed to environmental protection. The social commitment too was further developed: for the third year TUI donated five euros for every child that participated in the Kids Run to the UNICEF aid project “Water for Niger – Every drops counts“. The goal is to contribute to improving the living conditions of children in Niger. The amount donated for the 2,000 young athletes taking part was rounded up to €10,000. At the same time the travel group supported projects run by the Peter Maffay Foundation, the RTL fundraising marathon and the Family Association.

Runners warm up with Achim Achilles /Joey Kelly runs the marathon
In the few minutes before the starter’s gun was fired the athletes got into first gear by warming up with Germany’s most well known recreational runner Achim Achilles, the author and columnist for the Spiegel Online. Among the starters were also the extreme sportsman Joey Kelly and cycling Olympic winner Stefan Steinweg. TV presenter Andrea Ballschuh used the training and her participation in the TUI Marathon to get back into shape after the birth of her child. 13 teams competed for the FIRST Business Travel Running Award over the half marathon distance. In first place was the “Cava Krause” team based around the singer Mickie Krause.

TUI Marathon 2011 to have new goals
Michael Lambertz, Director of Group Marketing at TUI AG and responsible for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, announced that the running event would be continued. Next year the marathon will become even more international and grow even more. The 8th International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will take place on 16 October 2011.”

Visit www.tui-marathon.com for further information and the results list. A free TV report (length: 2-3 minutes; German sound track/no sound track) that can be broadcast will be available at www.hellosports.com from 8pm on Sunday 17 October.

Palma de Majorca, 13 October 2010. The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca continues to enjoy increasing support. Already 6.000 runners were registered in the week before the marathon; this corresponds to an increase of 30 percent in the number of participants. In the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ the athletes will run on Sunday, 17 October along the promenade and through the urban area of Palma. Runners from some 56 different countries will be taking part. The number of runners from the United Kingdom is up as much as 100 percent at more than 650. “We are very pleased that this sporting event is continuing to grow and provide a wide range of inspiration,“ said Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing at TUI.

The 7th TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca is embedded in a comprehensive sustainability concept. Within the framework of the marathon shuttle bus services will be provided for the runners, and exhibitors are contractually obliged to separate any waste according to type and where possible to avoid it. The food and drinks provided to the runners will be mainly local products. Even the partners and co-sponsors of the marathon will be adhering to the sustainability concept, for instance utensils supplied to the runners will be made of ecological and recyclable raw materials. At the same time the social commitment will come to the fore. The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca is supporting projects arranged by Unicef, the Peter Maffay Foundation, the RTL fundraising marathon and the Family Association. Moreover, every donation made by customers to the TUI Forest on Majorca, a reforestation project, will be doubled by the Group.

Dear runners,

We’re already counting down to the 7th TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca! It’s time to pack your bags and slowly phase out your training … can you feel yourself getting excited in anticipation?
We’re looking forward to the event and to seeing you there. Yet before your departure we want to tell you the following important information:

Special services
This year we have set up a new range of services that should prove useful for you and those accompanying you during your stay on Majorca and when running in the ”most beautiful island marathon in the world“.

    1. “Rent a scooter“: you now have the opportunity to rent a motor scooter in the event centre in the Parc de la Mar so that anyone with you on Majorca can ride with you while you run through Palma. Keep an eye open for the Cooltra rental stand.

    2. Bus transfer: the public transport system of the City of Palma, EMT, is offering a free special bus service to the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca for all helpers and runners participating in the event. You will be able to use all the bus routes on 18 October from 7am to 5pm free of charge. In lieu of a bus ticket, runners should show their start number and helpers their accreditation papers. Runners who have booked a TUI Marathon travel package receive a separate shuttle transfer directly from the hotel.

    3. Child supervision: On the day of the marathon we have also arranged for something for the kids. In the Baadingo Kids’ Club in the Parc de la Mar they will be able to have just as much fun as their parents who are running. Opening times of the child supervision: Sunday, 8am to 4pm.

Runners’ Café at the Playa de Palma
The Café Mar de Nun at the Cala Estancia (not far from the well known Club Puro Beach, www.mardenun.com) is the official runners’ café this year for the TUI Marathon. The kitchen crew has included three runners’ meals in the menu, worked out by the nutrition specialist Gabriela Nicola, and moreover created a fruit cocktail. All runners with a start number will in addition be given a practical wrist bag and invited to come in the evening after the marathon to partake of some fresh fruit and a flan. During the race the staff of the Mar den Nun will be offering a delicious brunch for spectators – and a seat in the café directly on the route, plus a view of the beach and El Arenal.

Party time
The Pasta Party will take place in the Parc de la Mar below the La Seu cathedral. The plaza, which is not far from where the start numbers are issued, is just as inspiring as every year with its special atmosphere and a lovely view across the water in the Parc de la Mar. You can look forward to a delicious pasta meal and a casual setting on Saturday from 2 to 6pm.

The major After-Race Party is yet another highlight of the weekend for runners and helpers in Palma. Enjoy yourself in a lively celebration with like-minded people, share your personal running success with others and dance the evening away – you can do all this and more in the Megapark at the Playa de Palma on Sunday from 8pm. Every runner who turns up in a finisher’s T-shirt will receive a free drink and a curried sausage.

"Warm up" before the start with Achim Achilles
Germany’s most well known amateur runner Achim Achilles, author and columnist for the Spiegel Online, is responsible for the warm-up session on the big marathon day. Together with trainers from the TUI cruise ship “Mein Schiff“ he will help to loosen up your muscles and raise your spirits just before the off. So, get to the start on time!

Have a good journey!

Your TUI Marathon Team

The tale of the little drop of water

After the youngsters taking part in the UNICEF Kids Run pass the finishing line this year they will be awarded not only a medal, a certificate and T-shirt, but they will also receive a small book entitled "The water drop”.
The tale is about some children living in the desert who are suffering from thirst and in the end decide to go on a long and arduous journey to ask some other children for help.

The author of the book is Nikola Gerein, who herself has two children. The book was illustrated by Beatriz Carcamo. " The water drop" is a paperback printed in colour and has a DIN A 5 format, younger children will have to have the book read to them by adults, but older children will be able to read it themselves.

In good time before the start of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca the book will be sent to those schools whose classes are participating in the UNICEF Kids Run. This will enable schoolchildren to familiarise themselves with the topic before the race.

The story can be downloaded in any of four languages from the internet at UNICEF Kids Run.

Kids running for kids in the 3rd Unicef Kids' Run
Peter Maffay on the starting gun at Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, 30 September 2010. Rock star Peter Maffay is getting this year's 3rd Unicef Kids' Run under way. The next generation of runners have the opportu-nity to convert their sporting ambition into a donation at the Kids' Run on Mallorca. On 16 October 2010 talented young runners will be taking part in the Kids' Run as one of the events surrounding the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, running as "Children of the North running for Children of the South". For every child taking part TUI is donating five euro to the "Water for Niger – every drop counts" drinking water project. The information campaign highlights the importance of water for children's survival. "I always see supporting children as an important task, so I am delighted to see so many children taking part in the Unicef Kids' Run," states Maffay, who has set up a foundation to provide traumatised children and young people with activity holidays in Mallorca at a country house in the north of the island. TUI is supporting the project with free flights. Maria Antonia Caimari, the Chair of the Balearics' Unicef Committee, explains: "Niger is the poorest country on earth, with neither resources of its own nor any opportunities open to it. The population faces a constant battle for survival. We are all grateful to TUI for or-ganising this event."

José Carlos Araujo Nunes (RCD Mallorca), Maria Isabel Gonzalez Carrasco (President IME), Maria Antonia Caimari (President UNICEF Comitee of the Balearic Islands), Katharina Mommertz (Manager sponsoring and events of TUI)
Depending on their age group, the small runners will cover a distance of between 600 and 1200 metres. Their sporting commitment will be recognised the award of a certificate, a medal and a t-shirt. As an extra highlight this year, the up-and-coming sportsmen and women will also receive a fairy tale book that uses a story to explain the basic concept behind the Kids' Run. From an imaginative story they will learn who benefits from the donations generated from the Kids' Run. José Carlos Araujo Nunes, who plays for and captains RCD Mallorca, is offering his sporting support: "The UNICEF Kids' Run gives the children of Mallorca the opportunity to combine solidarity, fun and aid, all in a healthy fashion. I hope that this year will once again see many children taking part!"

Michael Lambertz, Head of Group Marketing at TUI, is delighted with the high num-ber of participants: "It is a great thing to experience children putting the concept of aid into action. Due to the great demand expressed in 2010, we have been able to increase the maximum number of runners by 25%, bringing the field up to 2000 children." It is still possible to register online for the Unicef Kids' Run until 6.10.2010.

The TUI Marathon finisher shirt
This year the finisher shirt is green! For the first time the manufacturer Pearl Izumi has made the shirt with a high proportion of bamboo.
The shirt is made 49% of bamboo carbo and 51% of conventional polyester and its special manufacturing process helps to maintain the natural material properties.

With adding the bamboo ash to the polyester fibre the structure of the fabric becomes more open-pored and enhances its properties of odour inhibition and moisture transport.

This quality functional shirt has been specially designed for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca 2010. This is a must-have for all TUI Marathon fans!

The Finisher’s Shirt has a standard cut and as such is suitable for both men and women. You can order the Finisher’s Shirt at the same time you register for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca 2010. And for those who would prefer to decide at short notice, the functional shirt can be purchased at the event for a price of €10 – for as long as stocks last. It is available in the sizes XS to XL.

And the colour selection has special importance for the event: With the green finisher shirt we would like to remind of the importance attaching to sustainability in the context of the “Green Marathon”.

RUN FOR GOOD – the cooperation with Runner´s World
Runnersworld.co.uk, the UK's biggest online running community, and TUI launched a joint campaign in April.

We were looking for inspirational running stories under the motto “Run For Good”. The winner was the compelling story: “A tribute to my goddaughter Amelia”. Submitted by runnersworld.co.uk member G2 Grasshopper, the moving story describes her best friend's struggle after the tragic stillbirth of her daughter Amelia and G2 Grasshopper's years of running for Tommy´s, the baby charity that supports families suffering similar tragedies.

After reading her story, TUI is inviting G2 Grasshopper and a companion to the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. Six more runners, who all submitted inspiring stories for the “Run For Good” cooperation have won running gear from our partner Pearl Izumi. All the running and charity stories submitted for the Run For Good campaign can be found at

Sustainability concept presented for TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca
Focus on the environment and social aspects

Palma de Majorca, 10 June 2010. Environment and social commitment – these are the two major supporting themes of the sustainability strategy behind the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca. Consequently TUI, Europe’s leading leisure travel group, will operate the world’s most beautiful island marathon under the “green marathon” leitmotiv in the future. Sustainability has had a firm place in TUI’s corpo-rate philosophy and culture since 20 years. “As the organiser and name sponsor of the Marathon we feel it is our duty to consider the aspect of sustainability in this major sporting event even more than we have been doing in the past and make it more targeted,“ said Michael Lambertz, Marketing Director and responsible for the Marathon at TUI.

It is very important that the tour operators too promote responsibility for the environment. That’s why we congratulate TUI for their initiative in the diversifica-tion of tourism products to be permanently on the look-out for harmony with the natural environment," said Gabriel Vincens Mir, Environment and Mobility Minister of the Balearics. And María Isabel González, Sport Councillor of Palma added: “We believe it is important and good that companies promoting sporting events highlight such initiatives for protecting the environment. The future lies in an on-going en-joyment of sporting activities, while minimising the waste caused as well as the envi-ronmental pollution.“

In the development of the so-called “Green Marathon“ concept TUI oriented itself on the guidelines for environmentally friendly major sporting events, which have been worked out jointly by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the Ger-man Olympic Sports Association. “We are well aware that major sporting events also create environmental burdens,“ said Lambertz. “For this reason,“ he continued, “we have already in the past paid considerable attention to environmental aspects associated with the TUI Marathon, but now it is time to extend these even more.“

For instance TUI contributes to the protection of the environment by making a fixed contribution for every Majorca flight. The proceeds are invested directly in the TUI Forest in the northeast of the island. In addition, TUI doubles every voluntary tree donation to the TUI Forest made by customers. Within the marathon event shuttle bus services are provided for the participants, whereas exhibitors are con-tractually obliged to avoid waste and sort any waste that they do produce. The waste along the route is cleared and appropriately sorted, while the food and drinks for the runners en route are mainly local products.

Partners and co-sponsors of the marathon also adhere to the sustainability concept, for instance by providing running equipment from ecologically and recyclable raw materials.

TUI’s second approach in its sustainability strategy is the acceptance of social re-sponsibility. Since 2008 TUI has been working together with UNICEF Majorca on the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca. For every child that participates in the Kids’ Run, the running event on the day before the marathon, TUI donates five euros to the UNICEF aid project “Water for Niger – every drop counts“, which works towards improving the living conditions of children in that African region.

Another socially oriented form of cooperation involving the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca exists with the Peter Maffay Foundation, which focuses its efforts on a therapeutic ”children’s finca“ on Majorca. This cooperation allows Tabaluga children who are looked after in the finca to take part in the Kids’ Run with their very own starter’s number. Moreover, TUI contributes to the work of the foundation by pro-viding free flights for the youngsters.

This year the Family Holiday Association is the partner organisation on the British market. When booking a travel package, runners from the United Kingdom can give disadvantaged families the chance of a holiday.

TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca and charity – they belong together. For instance the TUI Marathon has for years been supporting international aid projects such as the UNICEF Kids Run. TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca sets sights on the English market
IBATUR Partner for the seventh event

Berlin, 10 March 2010. With travel packages for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK and the Netherlands the seventh TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is more international than ever. In particular the travel operator aims to penetrate the English market and its huge marathon potential. “The results from the IPSOS market research study on sport sponsoring demonstrate that some four million Germans know the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca,” says Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing at TUI. “One of the major objectives for 2010 is to achieve similar outstanding levels of recognition in England and the Netherlands. We intend to reach this target together with out partners.”

IBATUR, the Institute for Balearic Tourism, is again TUI’s partner for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. “In the area of tourism and sport the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca has already become a classic and a flagship for the island of Mallorca,” said IBATUR director Susanna Sciacovelli at the ITB in Berlin. For the first time the TUI marathon has found a British cooperation partner - the Family Holiday Association. This organisation helps sick and socially disadvantaged children to go on holiday with their families.

Susanna Sciacovelli (Director of Institute for Balearic Tourism), Michael Lambertz (Chief Marketing Officer TUI Travel plc), VicenteTorres (General Director for Promotion of the Tourism Office from the Balearic Goverment.)

TUI UK & Ireland support the Family Holiday Association

TUI UK & Ireland are proud to support the Family Holiday Association.

The charity has been established for over 30 years and provides holidays and short breaks for children and their families who are living in poverty. The families are referred to us by welfare agents such as teachers and doctors and we also work with a number of well known charities such as Barnardo’s and the NSPCC. Often, the children are dealing with very difficult circumstances such as illness, abuse and bereavement. The Family Holiday Association believes that every child deserves a holiday and the long term benefits of a holiday are life changing.
The families are provided with either a short break or week stay in a seaside caravan park in the UK or Ireland. The break gives them chance to rest, recuperate and re-strengthen family bonds. For many children, this is their first ever family holiday and the first time they have ever seen the sea.
For more information on the charity please visit www.fhaonline.org.uk.

We would like to encourage all UK runners to support the charity by raising sponsorship money for either the full or half marathon or 10k run at the 7. International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. For details on how to do this please contact Jacqulyn Bell Jacqulyn@fhaonline.org.uk.

Running for a good cause – using the money from the Unicef Kids Run to combat water shortage in Niger

"Children of the North run for children of the South" – running under this motto 1,600 children started in the Unicef Kids Run in October as part of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.
Besides the pure fun of running the focus was also on a good cause: for every child that participated TUI donated five euros to the Unicef aid project “Water for Niger – every drop counts“, which works towards improving the living conditions of children in the region.
TUI handed over the title sponsoring of the Kids Run to the children’s aid fund in 2009. The amount donated was rounded up to €10,000, which went to the benefit of the African country.

One in five of children in Niger, one of the poorest regions in the world, does not reach his or her fifth birthday. The campaign “Water for Niger“ aims at sensitising people to the problem of mortality as a result of a lack of water. It is directed at teachers and schoolchildren and provides material on this subject for instruction and increasing awareness. Up to now Unicef has already collected €200,000. Unicef’s aim is to provide the population of Niger with access to running water and as such reduce the mortality rate among children.

Leaving the clouds behind

So that was the 6th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca! Thanks to you taking part we were able to crack the 7000-entrants mark this year: 7,345 runners from 56 countries ran the course. That’s an increase of 16 percent in the number of runners.

We are proud of this figure and it proves just how popular the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ has now become. To be honest, an hour before the start we were just a little sceptical. Indeed for the first time at sunrise the Majorcan sun was blotted out by dark clouds. Pity about the photographs – but good for you! You probably enjoyed the temperatures at the start at around 15°C and which increased to 20°C around midday. So, ideal running weather … and right on time for the award ceremony it came out – the sun.

Now its over we can straight away look forward to the next event – we are already excited about the 7th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca to be held on 17 October 2010.

Great that you were there! Great that the TUI Marathon has once again found some more supporters.

Have a good trip home and till soon,
the TUI Marathon Team

Dr Eckart von Hirschhausen and Achim Achilles in the 10km duet
What would the TUI Marathon be without celebrity runners? Running for the first time this year was the comedian and acclaimed author Dr med Eckart von Hirschhausen. He ran for his “Humor hilft Heilen“ (Humour helps Healing) foundation, which arranges for clowns to come to German hospitals to cheer up above all young patients and instil them with fresh courage for their future life. TUI supported the dedicated physician by donating 10,000 euros. Dr Eckart von Hirschhausen ran the 10-kilometre distance together with Achim Achilles, author of the popular column on running in Spiegel Online. The two celebrity runners entertained the Marathon visitors by their performances in the run-up to the race: Dr med Eckart von Hirschhausen presented his new stage show ”Liebesbeweise“ (Proof of love) to 1,600 spectators in the Palma auditorium. Achim Achilles read from his books and columns and entertained the audience with anecdotes from his life as Germany’s most famous amateur runner.

Off-route, an attractive fringe programme over the weekend awaits visitors to the marathon. DJs Blank &Jones will be making the Pasta Party in Parc de la Mar a highlight. 07.10.2009 - Marathon championships and a full supporting programme at the world's most scenic island marathon – Pasta Party with Blank & Jones, running with Dr. med. Eckart von Hirschhausen

Marathon championships and a full supporting programme at the world's most scenic island marathon – Pasta Party with Blank & Jones, running with Dr. med. Eckart von Hirschhausen

The world's most scenic island marathon - the 6th TUI Marathon being run in Palma de Mallorca on 18 October 2009 - now has an additional attraction to offer: for the first time this extravaganza of running in the heart of Palma will include the Balearic Marathon Championships. Race Director Oliver Baldomero congratulates the inhabitants of the Balearic metropolis: "The fact that the TUI Marathon is now in its sixth running and this year also incorporates the Balearic Marathon Championships speaks volumes about the outstanding organisation and quality of this important sporting event in such a symbolically significant city as Palma!" Michael Lambertz also sees this special development as a positive step forward: "The incorporation of the marathon by the Balearics Athletic Association demonstrates the extent to which the event has gained acceptance within the Balearics group," in the words of TUI's Director of Group Marketing.

However, it is not only the runners arriving from their many and various countries of origin for the 6th TUI Marathon in Palma de Mallorca who are in for a treat; a widely varied range of supporting events will ensure that the great running spectacle also provides a genuine experience for those spectating.

At this year's Pasta Party before the 2009 TUI Marathon, the DJs Blank & Jones will be making sure that this is an unforgettable pasta feast. Their four top-ten albums issued under their own names in Germany alone, and a variety of productions with and for artists such as Freddy Mercury, the Pet Shop Boys, Moby, New Order and the Cure, all speak for themselves. As a double act, they will be presenting their concept of the perfect soundtrack for a superb Pasta Party, live in Mallorca.

Two celebrity participants in the 10K race - the cabaret artiste Dr. med Eckart von Hirschhausen and running columnist Achim Achilles - will be delighting all running fans with their appearances over the weekend of the event. These will see Eckart von Hirschhausen making his first-ever foreign appearance on Friday 16 October at 18.30 in the Palma Auditorium, presenting his "Liebesbeweise / Proof of Love" show. Achim Achilles will be presenting highlights from his books on Saturday 17 October at 14.30 and at 16.00 in the TUI Marathon processing centre in the Parc de la Mar.

For all of those who would like to wind up the long day of the Marathon in a convivial group, this year for the first time there will be an "After-Race Party". From 20.00 on, runners and race helpers alike will find an exciting musical mix of Spanish, German and English-language classics waiting for them at the Playa de Palma in the Mega Park. There will also be former TUI Marathon runner Jürgen Drews performing his hits - and there will be a free drink waiting for all runners arriving at the After-Race Party in their finishers' shirts.

21.09.2009 - The new GRR Flyer with the dates of the members - Running year 2010 - German Road Races as a Facilitator for the Sport of Running

We have presented a wide range of these topics for discussion in our symposia to the decision makers from various organisations.

German Road Races (GRR) is an interest group for German road racing events, which currently has a membership of 50 event organisers. Over the past two years, we have successfully placed the focus of our interest in educating our running audience about health issues and improving networking in emergency situations.

We have presented a wide range of these topics for discussion in our symposia to the decision makers from various organisations.

The promotion of the next generation of runners in Germany continues to be one of our primary concerns, and the impressions from the World Championships in Athletics in 2009 in Berlin confirm this as a necessary issue.

Our athletes achieved medals and best performances in the sprint, throwing and jumping events, but for the spectators’ most popular running events, the German Athletics Association (DLV) went empty handed once again.

The problem certainly does not lie in a lack of opportunities to compete in running events, as almost all of the GRR event organisers offer highly visible and prominent running events for young athletes. Yet providing opportunities is one thing, and providing targeted and consistent support is another.

This is one area that German Road Races intends on developing more strongly in the future, so that running becomes more appealing to plenty of young people in Germany. GRR as a facilitator for the sport of running! Why not?

In 2009, the GRR Prizes for Young Talents were presented in Ingolstadt and in Berlin to Anna Hahner and Robert Krebs, and Jürgen Stephan from Kassel was honoured for his excellent work as a trainer.

Your health continues to be an issue “dear to our hearts”, which is why we will be presenting a new edition of our Health Check at the end of 2009 and will continue to offer you valuable steps toward healthy running.

The www.germanroadraces.de website has proven itself as an upto- date source that is well worth reading, which provides a diverse selection of topics in a rich repository for our readers and runners.

We are delighted to have you participate in one of our high-quality events, and we would like to wish you a good time running, skating or walking.

14.09.2009 - Thirst quencher for runners and helpers: Water Gallery is official partner of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca

Running is thirsty work. Marathon runners must drink a lot to compensate for the loss of liquid during their long physical exertion. This year for providing water to the runners and voluntary helpers, the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca team has been able to sign up with Water Gallery as an official partner. The company will produce 120,000 bottles (33cl) with the TUI Marathon logo on the label exclusively for the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“.

The "Water Gallery" based in Santa Ponsa has been around only since 2008, yet it has already established itself on the market. Customers are provided here with the broadest offering of premium water on the Balearics: water to accompany whisky and wine, water for preparing meals, fine tea and coffee and – especially important for the marathon – water as a thirst quencher and for topping up the body’s mineral levels after sporting activities.

“The supply of water is one of the most important aspects of a marathon event,“ emphasises Katharina Mommertz, project manager of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. “We are happy to have found a reliable and competent partner in Water Gallery, a company that specialises exclusively in this essential element for life. As the market leader on the Balearics Water Gallery believes in quality – just like the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.“

13.03.2009 - 6th TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca with even more diversity
Walking and Nordic Walking as new disciplines / IBATUR is again partner

Berlin, 12 March 2009. The days are now gone in which walkers were laughed at by runners. Walking, either with or without sticks, has developed into a popular leisure pastime and sport for the masses. The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca has taken note of this trend and now offers for the first time Walking/Nordic Walking over 10 kilometres as a separate discipline. In its sixth year the “most beautiful island mara-thon in the world“ will be even more colourful and more diverse.

“Over the past five years the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca has become an event of immense importance for Majorca,” said Miquel Nadal, Tourism Minister for the Balearics at the International Tourism Fair (ITB) in Berlin. This is why IBATUR, the Balearic tourism institute, will be involved once again this year as the partner. “As the biggest tour operator in Europe, TUI has managed to combine tourism and leisure sport in a wonderful way,” according to Miquel Nadal. And Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing at TUI, added: "The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca has become a firm date in the international running calendar. We are pleased about IBATUR’s renewed commitment – together we will be able to consolidate this sporting event on this the most popular island of TUI’s guests, and make it even more successful."

As part of the revamping, the Kids’ Run too has been modified. The route has been changed and there is a new registration procedure; parents can now register their children in advance via an online application form. Owing to the record number of participants last year the organisers have further increased the number of places available so that now a total of 1,600 children can take part. Once again TUI has been able to secure UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, as a cooperation partner for the Kids’ Run.

Background: The 6th International TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca will take place on 18 October 2009. The organiser is expecting more than 5,000 runners from all over Europe to take part in the disciplines of the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10-kilometre run and Walking/Nordic Walking. One day earlier on 17 October the starter’s gun will be fired for the Kids’ Run. Located in the Parc de la Mar below the La Seu Cathedral will be the event centre with the popular Marathon Fair.

16.10.2008 - TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca celebrates fast and furious fifth anniversary
Spanish beat course record / TUI donates 13.615 euros to UNICEF

Palma de Mallorca, 19 October 2008. Anniversary atmosphere on and along the route – once again in this fifth year thousands of runners and spectators enthused by the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. It is quite clear that the “most beautiful island marathon in the world” has now gained a firm place in the European marathon scene. The number of runners also confirms this: 6.310. Runners from 50 countries took part, of which 1.223 ran the marathon and 2.463 the half marathon. Some 1.124 runners took to the start of the 10km run. Compared to the previous year the organiser registered an increase of 20 percent in the number of participants during the weekend.

At temperatures of around 26 degrees the runners enjoyed the panoramic route winding through the old town, around the harbour and along the Playa de Palma. With the Cathedral La Seu as a backdrop, Dr Michael Frenzel, chief executive of TUI AG, fired the starter’s gun. By moving the start and finish area this year to the wonderful Parc de la Mar the event gained a lot of atmosphere. “The international mood and feeling of the event is attracting more and more runners from all over the world. Indeed this development confirms that Mallorca as well as TUI are definitely on the right track,“ said Dr Michael Frenzel.

Marathon winner from Spain improves course record
Miguel Capó Soller Spain left all the other runners behind: He set the winning time coming in at 2:28:28 and improved the course record for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca by three minutes. In second place was the US-American Brian Godsey, finishing in 2:37:15. Third was Niklas Kroehn from Austria (2:43:00).

In the women’s section Svenja Gayk from Germany was the first over the line in a time of 3:04:05. Following hard on her heels in second and third place were the German Monika Turra (3:15:00) and Susan Gawley from Great Britain (3:18:25).
The fastest half marathon runner finishing in 1:09:39 was Blazej Brzeziski from Poland , who at the same time beat the course record. Second place was taken by the Dutch Michael Woerden, he completed the course in a time of 1:14:05. In third place was Marc André timed at 1:14:16. First in the women’s race was Tracey Morris from Great Britain in a time of 1:18:00. She beat the course record as well. Crossing the finishing line behind her were Stefanie Wiesmair (1:24:21) from Germany and mountainbike world champion Marga Fullana (1:24:46) from Spain .

Celebrity runners: the “ Battle of the giants“
Pop singer Jürgen Drews and Achim Achilles, author of the popular column on running in the Spiegel Online, afforded an exciting dual over the half marathon distance. In the end they crossed the finish line together in a time of 2:31:49. As part of the marathon supporting programme Achim Achilles read from his book “Achilles’ Verse“ and “Achilles’ Laufberater“ and entertained the audience with anecdotes from his life as Germany’s most well known amateur runner.

13.615 Euro for UNICEF
1.500 children – more than twice as many as last year – revealed their sporting abilities in the second Kids’ Run. “Children of the North run for children of the South“, was the motto for up-and-coming athletes between four and twelve year olds. On the day before the main event they ran a circular course on the Paseo Antonio Maura. Besides running for the fun of it, there was a good cause behind it. For every child that took part TUI donated five euros to the UNICEF programme for education and sport. This good cause also applied to the starters of the most prestigious discipline – the marathon; TUI donated for each runner who completed the 42.195km course likewise five euros to the United Nations Children’s Fund. The total donations amounted to 13.615 euros.

Here’s to the next time – running event goes into its sixth year
Michael Lambertz, head of TUI AG Group Marketing and responsible for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, took the opportunity already at this early stage to announce the continuation of this running event: “For next year we are expecting even more runners to come. And we will continue to fill TUI guests and the inhabitants of the island with enthusiasm.“ The 6th International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will take place on 18 October 2009.

16.10.2008 - Island marathon starts off in top form in the anniversary year
New as well as established ideas at 5th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca

Hanover/Palma de Mallorca, 16 October 2008. This year the start and finish area has been moved near to the cathedral, UNICEF is the new partner for the Kids Run and the climax will be a running duel between Jürgen Drews and Achim Achilles. Indeed the 5th International TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca is turning out to be a great attraction in the anniversary year with a great many new ideas for both run-ners and spectators.

A real eye-catcher is the newly designed start and finish area in the Parc de la Mar below the La Seu cathedral. Spread out in front of this fantastic backdrop is the popular Marathon Market and the diverse supporting programme. The park – laid out with effervescent fountains, lawns and gardens – will as a result be at the cen-tre of the event.

The younger runners too can look forward to a new running setting and an appeal-ing route. On the Paseo Antonio Maura up-and-coming athletes between four and twelve year olds will compete for a good cause on a circular course of 500, 1,000 or 1,500 metres, depending on their age. Running under the motto of “Children of the north running for children of the south“ TUI will donate for each child that runs five euros to the UNICEF Programme for Education and Sport.

What would the “most beautiful island marathon of the world“ be without a celeb-rity starter? Achim Achilles, author of the popular column on running in Spiegel Online and pop singer Jürgen Drews, self-styled King of Mallorca, will be running their own race in the half marathon. Thanks to the professional preparations in the yoga studio “Yogayou“ in Palma, managed by actress Ursula Carven and Kim Steeb, both of the runners are in good shape.

15.09.2008 - Running without Seeing

Although no one notches up brilliant times at fun runs there are still many personal histories that are well worth the telling. One of these is that of Francisco Ferrer Maroto.
At first sight there is nothing unusual about him. He is an enthusiastic 62-year-old athlete who trains regularly and competes in races, who has the blood of a runner in his veins.
To all appearances he leads a very normal life: he likes to read, enjoys going to the cinema, takes his dogs for walks, goes out with his wife… displays a happy disposition and a positive attitude.

But what distinguishes Francisco Ferrer Maroto is his rare illness: retinopathia pigmentosa. This is a serious eye disease in which the field of vision gradually narrows. As if he were looking down a tunnel that grows ever narrower. In some cases it can lead to blindness. Francisco is of course a member of the National Association of the Spanish Blind ONCE (www.once.es), which has provided him with technical and human support to deal with his disability and make his daily life easier.

For him, the experienced and tireless runner, it would have been much easier simply to stay at home and avoid making life even more difficult. However, this throws up a problem: his passion for running. For our veteran competitor this is a passion that causes many difficulties. Sometimes he falls or gets lost and if there is not enough light he can’t even run. He knows his usual running routes like the back of his hand, although he is keenly aware that any new crack in the pavement can cause a painful stumble. In the face of these difficulties Francisco does have to admit that he gets a little scared sometimes. This naturally raises the question whether this is all worth the effort. And the answer is: but of course it is, because otherwise this would mean the erosion of willpower, leading to resignation and conformity. Francisco Ferrer Maroto is one of those people who often fall down only to pick themselves up again. And so he will also be up and ready on the 19 October to take part in his fourth TUI Marathon – to be precise the 10-km fun run. Anyone who doesn’t know the route can follow Francisco or even better run next to him to cross the finishing line together as winners.

04.08.2008 - TUI Marathon Song Contest

It’s official: we have a TUI Marathon Song!
On 21 July 2008 the Jury chose the winner of the competition “La Canción de la TUI Maratón":
I’m running for you“ by the four-member band TRECE. This is to be the title song of the TUI Marathon 2008.

In addition to publicity, the winners of the song contest will also:

- make an appearance at the two concerts of the chart programme ”Zona 40“ on 25 and 26 July 2008 on Majorca as well as at the concert ”40 Majorca Pop“ on 13 September in Palma, and
- receive a 4-day trip to the German metropolis of Berlin.

For the 5th TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca, 40 Principales Mallorca together with TUI looked for the best TUI Marathon Song by staging the competition "La Canción de la TUI Maratón". Participation was open to music bands and soloists who are newcomers in their artistic field of pop, rock or any other musical direction and are based in the province of the Balearic Islands.

The Band:
Sergio Revert: guitar and vocals
Manuel Martínez: vocals and guitar
Borja Andreu: bass
Carlos Pilán: drums and vocals

The four experienced musicians who make up “TRECE”, which they formed in 2007, recorded their first songs in their own studio this year. The band takes its musical influence from such sources as the “Lemonheads”, “Los Rodríguez” and “Pereza“.

20.05.2008 - Sports anniversary: TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca turns five
New start and finish below the La Seu Cathedral

Hanover, 20 May 2008. On 19 October 2008 the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca will celebrate its fifth anniversary. More than 5,000 runners from all over Europe are expected at this popular Balearic island. For participants there is the lure of a special highlight: the start and finish of the competition and the well-attended Marathon Fair and supporting programme have been moved to the Parc de la Mar, below La Seu Cathedral. This beautifully located park, featuring fountains and green areas, is the heart of the new event centre over the TUI Marathon weekend.

In line with its holiday promise TUI, as organiser and eponym, has been “putting a smile on peoples faces” at the event since 2004. “We are extremely pleased to see the numbers of runners increase from year to year. One of the reasons is undoubtedly the reputation we have earned for the high standard, which we will of course be maintaining for the world's most beautiful island marathon,” emphasises Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing at TUI and responsible for the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca. This year will also see the expansion of the Kids Run. Michael Lambertz: “The response to our first Kids Run was so overwhelming that we are developing this part of the programme to create an attractive event for the whole family.”

Info: On 19 October runners will be starting in three different disciplines: marathon, half-marathon and the 10-km race. The island marathon is accompanied by a colourful supporting programme with live music, kids programme and Kids Run on the day before.

03.05.2008 - Marathon partnership - Hanover and Palma de Majorca

The common sponsoring name of TUI and the conjoint handling of the sporting activities are strong connections in themselves. Now though, the “Marathon partnership“ between the state capital of Hanover and the Balearic metropolis of Palma de Majorca has been filled with even more life. TUI is offering a special prize for the fastest German man and for the fastest German woman over the classic distance of 42.195 kilometres at the TUIfly Marathon held on 4 May.

The prize is a four-day stay on Majorca from 17 to 20 October 2008 including the flight there and back, accommodation in an exclusive hotel with half board, as well as a free start in the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca on 19 October.

A similar package is being offered to the winners of Palma de Majorca race with the prize being for the TUI Marathon in Hanover on 3 May 2009. The special connection between the two events is underlined by the invitation of Hanover’s Lord Mayor Stephan Weil, who himself will be running on 4 May in the half marathon, to his Majorcan counterpart Aina Calvo Sastre to come to the TUIfly Marathon being held next weekend.

26.03.2008 - New start times apply for the 10-kilometre run

Runners in the 10-kilometre event to be held on 19 October as part of the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca are asked to start a little earlier than planned.
Owing to the change in the route at the finish and to aid an optimal organisation of the various races the start of the 10-kilometre distance has been brought forward by 40 minutes, from 10am to the new start time of 9.20am.

We kindly ask you to make a note of this amendment and consider it now at this early stage in your personal running preparations and general plans.

25.03.2008 - TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca

Further improvements at start and finish area of the most beautiful island marathon in the world

A reputation as being the most beautiful island marathon in the world has in recent years become firmly associated with the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca. In the past the numerous and extensive building work in the finishing area of the biggest running event on the Balearics necessitated considerable improvisation as well as compromises. But now the work has been completed, the central offices of the event and above all the finishing area have been moved closer to the centre of Palma and as such more into the public limelight.

No longer is the finish at the Paseo Maritimo, but instead directly in the Parc de la Mar, at the foot of Majorca’s landmark, the impressive cathedral. Here, on 19 October 2008, is where the winners and the final placings will be decided, here all the runners will complete their run in a unique atmosphere and environment.

On the days leading up to the top event the start numbers will be issued this year in the area around the Parc de la Mar; this will bring everything closer together and should ensure that things are easier to find and do. The event stage, the Marathon market, the clothes bag cloakroom, showers, award ceremony and of course the compulsory Pasta Party – everything will be located closer together for this the 5th marathon event on the island.

There is also a new route for the Kids Run to be held on the day before the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca. This run, which was held for the first time last year, was particularly well received. The young upcoming runners can test their abilities this time in the City of Palma on a circular course on the Av. D’Antoni Maura.
